Please forgive me.

Lucille was turned over to us by someone we’ll call Aaron. Aaron’s dream had been to breed his Paso stallion to a mammoth donkey jennet to hopefully get a gaited mule. Aaron’s health isn’t the greatest so he thought it best to get on with the dream and order a 10yo 55” jennet from what he thought was a reputable farm in Kentucky. The donkey’s name was Lucille Ball and she was $750, plus another $300 for shipping. The day of Lucille’s arrival came which much anticipation and excitement, but ended in frustration, disappointment, and anger. Because what stepped off the trailer was not a healthy 55” jennet, but a starved and foundered 50” 16 yo jennet covered in rain rot and possibly pregnant already.

Aaron kept Lucille for a month, feeding her, treating her rain rot, and doing what he could to make her comfortable. His vet palpated her and concluded that she wasn’t pregnant. Whew!

Then Aaron’s health took a turn for the worse and he could no longer care for his horses the way he wanted to. His Paso stallion, Percheron/Appy cross gelding, and molly mule are now for sale, but he knew he couldn’t sell Lucille the way she was and wanted to make sure that the sweet old gal got a loving home.

Since the timing of her arrival coincided with me running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off trying to care for the Fairmont horses, I never got pictures of her when she arrived five weeks ago. You’ll just have to imagine her about 150lbs lighter than this:

<img style="border-right-width: 0px;

Because of her previous founder, I’ve had to take it very slow with the feed and the turnout. She’s up to 45 min on the grass and 2qts Strategy twice a day and is still doing well. The rest of the day she spends in her pen near the house eating hay. She’s still very tender-footed on the front and it looks like someone just took a hacksaw and chopped off the elf shoes before they stuck her on the trailer headed to WV. There’s nothing for Brannon to work with yet, so we’re just waiting for her hooves to grow so he can start shaping them back into what they should be.

She’s been wormed with Zimecterin Gold twice since coming here and is on Strongid C. Since she still has a huge belly, I think I may get Doc to palpate her next time he’s out. Over the past year I’ve learned not to always trust other vets!

Her rain rot was mostly gone by the time she came here, but she still has little sores all over. They’re pretty itchy and she’d stand for hours if someone would just scratch her.

<img style="border-right-width: 0px;
She is the SWEETEST donkey in the world! She’d rather have attention than eat and will stop chewing if I walk over and pet her. Every morning she watches me through the house windows and will bray at me if I’m not moving fast enough towards her feed. She welcomes me home with a bray and alerts me to anyone coming down the driveway. She’s a gentle soul that seems to enjoy the company of cats and chickens, and barely bats an eye when Xena’s play gets out of control and takes her under Lucille’s feet.

Needless to say, I LOVE this donkey!

Traveler – 03/08/10

Fat as a tick. It’s been a long, cold, snowy winter for the both of us and we’ve just been trying to get by, day by day. Now that the weather is finally warming up, I’ve been able to take off his blanket during the days and got some pictures today. But first, let me catch you up on what’s been going on with him this winter.

The last time I posted, I mentioned that he was showing signs of gastric ulcers, so I took him off the senior and beet pulp. Once he wasn’t getting beet pulp anymore, I no longer soaked his feed. He soon started losing weight, so Doc came out and made the discovery that poor Timmy has NO bottom molars! So much for the Virginia vet saying his teeth looked fine! Since then, he’s been on 6qts of soaked Purina Strategy, three times a day, as well as 25lbs (dry weight) of soaked alfalfa cubes per day.

While he was down in weight, he developed a really nice infestation of lice under his two blankets. Six weeks, three tubes of Zimecterin Gold, and four canisters of lice powder later, the lice are finally gone. Doc had me roach his mane to kill off the eggs hiding under it. His hair is growing back now, but he still looks a little funny.

Last, but certainly not least, he had arthritis flare-ups back in December. His whole back left leg swelled all the way to the dock of his tail, and he could not put any weight on it for a few days. He had been on a supplement for arthritis since he got here, but it takes awhile for it to get into the system and do some good. Since the flare-ups in December, he’s had no more problems and even trots around the yard tossing his head at feeding time. He and Traveler even decided to go for a walkabout about a month ago, and walked almost a mile down the road before I caught up to them and turned them around.

<img style="border-bottom: 0px;

Even better news… Timmy has been adopted! He’ll be here for another few weeks to gain a little more weight and grow back that missing hair. I’ll miss the old guy!
When I take it off in the mornings he sometimes tries to move away as I’m undoing the buckles as if to say “Hey! It’s still cold out, what are you doing???” But he always stands still when I put the blanket back on in the evenings. Oh no. I have to go into the pasture and walk a few circles after him until he finally gives in and lets me get his halter on. This is a new development and I think it’s because he knows that if he’s not tied up, he can eat faster than Sky and go steal his food. I couldn’t electrify the fence, so ended up just stringing it up nice and tight and crossing my fingers. It didn’t take her long to realize that she could just walk right in between the strands and wander about the yard. So now the fence is mainly just for show, since I took one side down and she just comes and goes as she pleases anyway.

<img title="Picture 029" style="border-top-width: 0px; In fact, she loves having me scratch and peel it off. She’ll stand in one place forever with her upper lip sticking out and quivering whenever I find a particularly itchy spot. I’m on call for work this weekend and hopefully I can spend a couple of hours scrubbing all that nastiness off of her. Her gums are receding, most likely from malnutrition and what she chose to chew in place of actual food.

Fortunately, there doesn’t appear to be anything else wrong with her, except for the serious rain rot. She’s gaining weight and has proven to be quite the little talker! Every time she sees someone she greets them with a nicker and comes walking to the fence. A couple of weeks ago, I put up some temporary fence behind the workshop and moved her in there so I could keep a better eye on her. She’s very happy there since she gets attention from everyone that happens by.

<img title="Picture 069" style="border-right: 0px; Hopefully, like Ellie, the murmur is because of him being so underweight and will go away once he’s healthy. Unfortunately, it will affect his weight gain and it will take longer for him to get back up to a healthy weight.
With that in mind, I’ve changed him over to a low sugar diet: 4qts Purina Strategy and 2qts Rice Bran three times a day. It took a few days to transition him off the beet pulp and senior, and he’s only been on the low sugar diet for two days. He even let them share his meal the one time I forgot to tie them up before I fed him. He’s such a big sweetie!

Shane – 10/31/09

Shane is a 13yo Thoroughbred gelding, about 16.1h, who came to us from a college student in Clarksburg. He’s about 400lbs underweight, but his blood work checks out okay so the only thing he should need is food and farrier work. His feet are dry, cracked, and overgrown, and he’s lame on his right front with heat radiating down from the outside of his ankle down to his hoof. He’s got an old ankle injury there, but since he was sound two days ago and the heat in his hoof is only on the lateral quarter, I’m hoping all I’ll find is an abscess.

Timmy was checked out by a vet in Virginia before he was brought to Horse Haven Holler. The vet said his teeth are fine and the blood work came back mostly normal, with a few moderately high levels that the vet said were probably no cause for concern. At the time of his rescue, Timmy was not strong enough to make the long haul from Virginia, so he stayed where he was for a week and grew stronger on a diet of just grass and hay. He’ll start out on 1/2qt beet pulp and 1/2qt senior feed at each feeding.

I’ll be applying Hoof Heal to those feet every four days, and if he’s strong enough to stand for the farrier next week, he’ll get a much needed trim.
So I’m trying it on Lilo as well and hopefully… maybe… she’ll start putting on weight.

Oh, and on another note, I’ve been calling her Flo. It just slipped out one day and now I can’t seem to call her Lilo. I guess all I see is a tall, leggy red head who seems to say “Kiss my grits!” when she’s upset.

<img title="Picture 013" style="border-top-width: 0px; This mare has made absolutely NO progress. The only thing I can say, is that after weeks of Koppertox, her thrush is finally gone. She’s been wormed twice, two weeks apart, with Anthelcide and then Ivermectin. She’s getting 2qts of rice bran, 2qts of hay pellets, and 2 qts of rolled oats three times a day. She has plenty of pasture and I’ve also been throwing three square bales out to the three of them every day.

So, I think the Lilo picture updates will come once a month, rather than every two weeks as I did the others. However, I did want to share a breakthrough that happened tonight. Remember in my first Lilo post how I said she was shy and slow to trust? She’s been that way every day – I reach to pet her and she pulls away. I can catch her if I have feed, but other than that, she really has had no use for me… up until tonight.

When I took their buckets to them tonight I reached to scratch her head, as usual. And par for the course, she pulled away from me, but I managed a quick rub once she had her head back in her bucket. I left them to eat and came back about an hour later to collect up the buckets. Lilo was standing by herself (unheard of) by the gate, and Stride and Sadie were off in the pasture grazing. I walked up to Lilo and instead of pulling away, she lowered her head and let me scratch her ears and rub her face. I stopped petting her for a minute to chase a horsefly away from my head and she stepped closer and lowered her head even more until I scratched behind her ears again.

So I rubbed and petted this poor mare until the sun went down. As I walked away she just stood at the gate, staring after me. I looked out the kitchen window later and saw her grazing quietly between Stride and Sadie. I’m hoping with the mental adjustment her body will also finally adjust to the new environment and the new human and maybe she’ll finally start putting on some weight!

Lilo – 08/16/09

Just a quick update on Lilo… instead of moving Stride into the quarantine pasture with her the other day, we moved Maverick and the other little yearling studs in the quarantine and moved Lilo into the bachelor pad with Stride. We also put Sadie in there with them and the three have become the best of friends! As soon as Lilo and Stride introduced themselves, Lilo put her face in the grass and started grazing for the first time since she arrived here.

She eats her meals with gusto now and is actually in charge of the little threesome! She’s more energetic and comes trotting to the fence for meals instead of making me bring it to her. She’s not aggressive with Sadie or Stride, but the two respect her leadership and let her eat in peace. The first night together, Lilo and Stride insisted on eating out of the same bucket, even though there were two buckets right in front of them. They finished the first one then moved on to the next. It was so cute!

The day after posting my first post on Lilo my tiny little brain had an epiphany (it was painful, trust me). I know she was being fed beet pulp, senior, and rice bran at her previous home, so what makes me think the same feed will make her fat here? Her tucked up tummy and pickiness with feed made me think of Sadie and Indy earlier in the year when their ulcers were acting up. And I certainly wouldn’t doubt that previous stress and irregular feeding have given her gastric ulcers, so I transitioned her to the same diet that Sadie is on: rolled oats, rice bran, and corn oil. She loves it!

She’s been on that diet for a few days now, so we’ll see what happens in a couple of weeks!

Lilo – 08/11/09

Lilo is a 15 year old Saddlebred mare, broke by the Amish to ride and drive. She’s a very shy, quiet mare who is slow to trust humans. Someone else rescued her off the slaughter truck last year and she was even thinner than she is now. Then she was taken in by a family south of here, but after six months of feeding her senior, beet pulp, rice bran, and flax seed and not seeing much improvement, they decided to turn her over to us.

<img title="Picture 006" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;
Let’s start with the obvious fact that she’s thin. Yeah, no kidding, right? But look closely at her and you’ll see that she’s not quite as thin as you first thought. She’s got some muscle on her shoulders and butt and her ribs aren’t protruding that much. The first thing I notice on this mare is her TERRIBLE conformation! That long back that sits much lower than her croup, the straight shoulder and back legs… this mare was not built to withstand the workload imposed on her by the Amish. Three of her ankles are bulged with old injuries and she’s got mild arthritis in all four legs.

<img title="Picture 004" style="border-right: 0px;

She’s a very picky eater and wouldn’t finish her first dinner here last night. She has no interest in hay or grazing, but prefers instead to stand in one place and simply take in her surroundings for hours on end. We’re going to move gentle old Stride in with her today for company to see if that helps bring her out of her shell a bit.

We’ll worm her today with Anthelcide and have already started her feeding regimen, which is pretty simple:

1 qt soaked beet pulp, 1 qt senior, 1 qt rice bran

We gave her twice that last night when she got here and she barely ate half of it. If she finishes that much this morning, I’ll repeat the feeding again every two hours until she doesn’t want anymore. Since she’s so picky, we’ll have to play it by ear with her and only feed her what she will eat.

Holly – 08/09/09

This will be Holly’s last update here on Rescue Recoveries since she and Synergy go home with Maggie tomorrow!
She definitely seems spunkier now, and rips around the pasture with the two younger mares. She’s very vocal if I’m even a few minutes late with her food, but is still a big sweetheart that just wants to be loved and groomed. She’s not as interested in the hay roll as the two younger girls, and prefers to spend a lot of her time at the gate staring at the house and just waiting for the next meal. Because of that, I’ve cut back her feedings to three a day. I’m hoping she’ll stop expecting it so much and spend more time grazing or munching on hay. At this point, the hay is much more important in her diet than all the beet pulp and rice bran I’m feeding her.

8AM – 4 qts beet pulp, 2 qts rice bran pellets, 2 qts senior feed, Source, DAC oil.

3PM, 9PM – 4qts beet pulp, 2 qts rice bran, 2 qts senior

Once all that food is soaked it nearly fills a 5 gallon bucket and she still manages to finish eating before Synergy, who gets half the amount of beet pulp!
You can read how she came to be here at Horse Haven Holler here.

While this mare is not as starved as Ellie was when she got here, she is about 200lbs underweight. So I’ve started her out on the following feeding schedule:

6AM – 2qts beet pulp, 2 qts senior feed, 1/2 qt rice bran, source, red cell

12AM, 6PM, 10PM – 2qts beet pulp, 2 qts senior, 1/2 qt rice bran

I’ll keep the senior the same, but increase the beet pulp and rice bran over the next week.

She’s currently in the quarantine pasture with the 3yo filly that came with her and I just put a new hay roll in there with them this morning. Her feet are in great shape, she has been vaccinated this year, and was just wormed last month. The only other problem that I can see from the outside is the rain rot, which I’ll start scrubbing off and treating today.

Ellie – 05/14/09

Ellie has been here six weeks as of today. She’s finally starting to “bulk up” in my eyes. Until now, it’s just been baby steps, like “oh, she does have a butt”, and “hey, I found her neck”. When taking these pictures today I finally noticed her belly starting to round out. She no longer has that tucked up look under her stomach. Next stop – fat rolls!

Her ribs are almost invisible now. They look more visible in the pictures because when she was still very thin she shed out between her ribs, but still has the grey winter hair over each rib bone. So her hair has brown and white lines where her ribs are, making them more visible.

Her topline is starting to develop now and her backbone is no longer higher than her back muscles. Her feed regimen hasn’t changed since my last update. The one thing that continues to improve is her personality! She’s become quite the little charmer and looks to me for attention whenever she’s in the yard. She’ll walk up and put her head on my shoulder and pull me in close in an effort to get me to scratch her withers -- which, of course, I always do. :)

Ellie – 04/30/09

It’s Ellie’s four week anniversary today and I’m happy to say that her spooky evil twin went on vacation, hopefully for good. Within a few days of my last post she started calming back down and enjoying human interaction again. Glenn still can’t get near her unless I’m with her, but he doesn’t get to spend as much time with her as I do.

She’s been out with the main herd for almost two weeks, but spends most of her day pacing the fence and calling to me to open the gate and let her out into the yard. Yes, she’s a bit spoiled. The rest of the horses can’t figure out what her problem is as they continue to graze on the spring grass coming up in the pasture.

She’s down to three feedings a day now:

6AM – 2 quarts beet pulp, 1 quart 12% sweet feed, 2 cups rice bran, electrolytes, 1/2 cup flax seed

2PM - 1 quart beet pulp, 1/2 quart 12% sweet feed

8pm – 2 quarts beet pulp, 1 quart 12% sweet feed, and 2 cups rice bran.

You can still see her ribs and hip bones, but at least now when she lays down her stomach sticks up higher than those hips! Her hair is coming back in where rain rot had made her bald and the open sores that she had in numerous places have healed up and are growing over with hair. She’s still overly sensitive about being touched in the girth area and jumps away whenever I try to brush her there.

Her vulva infection has cleared up and she’s starting to play with the other horses more often, trotting and cantering around the pasture whenever the mood hits her. She’s got a lovely free flowing trot and a lope that looks wonderfully smooth. In another two weeks I’ll start ground work with her to increase muscle mass and get her back to where she should be.

<img title="Picture 016" style="BORDER-RIGHT: 0px; Since she’s been out free grazing in the yard, she’s already sniffed noses over the fence with most the herd, so the introduction should go pretty smoothly. I haven’t had the heart to put her back in the quarantine pasture. She’s become a fixture in the yard (and in my strawberry patch), but she longs to be with the herd. The herd offers protection, companionship… and plus she’s really got a crush on Gentry.

Her back is mostly bald from me scrubbing off all of the rain rot, but her new coat is coming in and I think she’ll be stunning in another month or so. She’s also got a lot of bald places all over her body, probably from the lice she had.

<img title="Picture 001" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px;

Last Saturday, the eleventh, she got a 250lb dose of Quest gel wormer. On Tuesday, she expelled a foot long worm, about 1.5” wide. I’ll spare you the picture. Next Wednesday she’ll get another 250lb dose of wormer and she’s also still on the daily Strongid C wormer.

Her personality is coming out now that she’s feeling better and has more energy. She’s a jumpy little mare that spooks at shadows and no longer wants me around unless I have food. She’s friendly enough while eating, and comes up to me every time I go outside in the hopes that I have more food on me. As soon as she realizes I’m without grain, she leaves before I can get very close.

Overall, I’m very pleased with her progress so far. At this rate, she should be back up to normal in another few weeks.
She’s getting so full on grass, that she just nibbles from her bucket now and then and never finishes one meal before the next meal time comes around. So for now I’m just leaving the bucket out there for her and filling it again when she finally empties it. The fact that she is no longer bolting her food the second I give it to her tells me that she is past feeling that each meal will be her last. She seems to know that the bucket will be there for her whenever she wants it and she can take her dear sweet time to eat it.

Now that she’s feeling a little stronger, I’ve moved the mineral block to one area, feed her in another, and have the trough in a totally separate area. She has to walk up and down hills to get from one to the other. This makes her move around more to get to what she wants – hence more exercise. Now that she’s got a full belly and a little more energy, exercise will be an important part of her recovery.

I’ve also added whole flax seed to her diet. Flax seed gets oily and slippery when soaked, which will not only help keep the digestive system moving, but will also help her skin and coat. I’m also putting healing salve on the girth area sores:

<img title="Picture 002" style="border-right: 0px;

This makes me wonder how badly her harness fit her and how much weight she was made to pull last Fall at the county fair. I’m going to try and track someone down that may recognize her from the fair and see what I can find out.

We picked up some Panalog for her vulva infection yesterday and she’s such a good sport about having it applied! As long as it’s attention and isn’t painful, she’s all for it.

The good news is that she now feels safe enough to lie down and get some much needed rest. Today was the first day we saw her go down and there was no hesitation about it. She sniffed the ground, pawed it twice, then dropped. She didn’t roll, but wiggled around a bit like she was getting comfortable then dropped her head, closed her eyes, and she was out.

<img title="Picture 008" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; He confirmed a few things that we already knew: she’s 400 pounds underweight, she’s three years old instead of five, and she’s a 1 on the Henneke body condition scale for horses.

Here are a few things I didn’t know or hadn’t noticed yet.

1) She has a mild heart murmur. This could be something that she had previously that she will always have, even when healthy, or it could be because of being so underweight, in which case it should go away once she’s healthy again.

2) She has an infection in her vulva.

3) She is practically bald under her belly, with open sores and rub marks on the girth area.'

4) Out of all the skinny horses Doc has seen this Winter, Ellie is the worst.

5) Her teeth are cracked and chipped, likely from eating sticks and/or rocks for lack of anything else to chew on. Remind you of a certain black lab rescued back in December out in Colorado?

We also took off the one remaining shoe this morning before Doc arrived and tried filing down the other very long hoof. She could only stand for a few minutes, so when she tried laying down on us we let her be and we’ll finish the pedicure later when she’s stronger.

I discussed my feeding regimen with Doc and here’s how we’re starting out.

6AM – 2 cups 12% Sweet Feed, Strongid C, 2 cups beet pulp, one cup rice bran, Source and Red Cell

10AM, 2PM, 6PM, 10PM – same amount of sweet feed, beet pulp, and rice bran.

I’ll slowly increase the quantities over the next two weeks. She has free access to all the grass and quality hay that she wants, as well as a trace mineral block and all the water she can drink.

Doc said it best, when he said “there are only two ways this can go --either she’ll get better, or she’ll die, because she can’t get any worse.”

<img title="DSCF3493" style="border-top-width: 0px;
